The tomb was part of a series of ancient tombs discovered along the second main aqueduct of the Zhang River Reservoir in Jingzhou. More than ,000 artifacts were recovered from the sites, but none were more impressive or surprising than the Sword of Goujian.Identification The sword bears an inscription in an ancient script known as Bird-worm seal script. Six of these ancient characters have been deciphered. The script reads: “King of Yue” and "made this sword for [his] personal use". After much debate, archaeologists, historians, and Chinese linguists came to a consensus: The sword belonged to Goujian, who ruled the Kingdom of Yue from 496 to 465 BC.Construction The Goujian Sword is a tin bronze sword, measuring 55.6 centimeters in length, including an 8.4 centimeter hilt. The blade is decorated with a repeating rhombi pattern, their dark lines standing out from the sword’s overall golden hue. The guard, meanwhile, is inlaid with blue crystals and turquoise.Legacy The Goujian Sword is not just a weapon; it is a symbol of the perseverance and determination of King Goujian and the people of Yue. Today, it is housed in the Hubei Provincial Museum, serving as a reminder of China’s rich history and the technological advancements of its ancient civilizations.
